Lacuna fungal nail treatment including diagnostic fungal test

The infected nails are painlessly drilled using tiny micro holes following a detailed consultation and careful preparation of the affected nails. Before we can undertake this treatment, we need to fully assess your nails and carry out a painless diagnostic test by taking a clipping of your nail to check for the presence of dermatophytes.  The results are ready within a few minutes.  Following the drilling of tiny micro holes into the affected nail plate, the application of Terbinafine spray is then carried out  We will also assess the skin on your feet and advise on additional creams that may be required to eradicate athletes foot. You will then be given the Terbinafine spray to use at home. We then see you back at 6, 12 and 18 weeks from the first treatment.

Fungal nail diagnostic test - without further treatment

If you have suspect you may have a fungal nail infection, we can carry out a painless diagnostic test where we take clippings of your suspected fungal nail which checks for the presence of dermatophytes (results given at your appointment). Once we have established that a nail is mycotic (fungal), we can discuss treatment options with you.

Musculoskeletal appointment (foot / ankle pain)

If you have pain in your foot or ankle, a musculoskeletal assessment is designed to assess and diagnose the problem wherever possible. We will take a full history of the problem and the symptoms and in many cases we can devise a treatment plan at the initial appointment for your to follow at home. Sometimes, further investigations may be required, such as a biomechanical assessment or referral to other specialists for X-ray, scans etc.

Other treatments may be offered to you for the relief of pain such as podiatric acupuncture (up to the knee) and / or level IV laser treatments.

Biomechanical Assessment / Manual Gait Analysis

It is rare to find that our left and right sides are symmetrical. Additionally, many of us have mild deformities – perhaps a torsion in your pelvis, a bowed leg, or one leg longer than the other. The Result?

When we stand, walk or run our body has to cope with and compensate for these anomalies. It is these compensations that put structures such as muscles, joints, ligaments and tendons under undue strain as they begin functioning in an abnormal or compromised manner. Over time the structures become inflamed or injured.

A Biomechanics assessment is an investigation into your lower limb function – looking closely for abnormalities and compensations. We can look closely into the underlying possible causes of heel pain, specific foot pain knee pain and even back pain.

Once we have identified the causes of your problems we can develop a tailor made treatment plan to improve your symptoms. This may be via referral to the Valley Clinic for Physiotherapy (our preferred referral partner) or by taking a 3D digital scan of your feet and prescribe custom made orthotic devices, or a combination of both

We will begin by taking a full history of your foot and lower limb pain. After that, we will look at the joints in your feet and ankles to assess their range of movement and look for any signs of weakness or overuse injury that could be causing the problem.

Next, we will do a series of seated tests, standing and dynamic tests. From this, we will piece together what is causing your problem and create the best treatment plan to resolve it. Please bring a pair of shorts with you or loose-fitting clothes.

Biomechanical Assessment with PodoSmart Gait Analysis

AVAILABLE ONLY at our Ilkley Clinic at Ashlands Road

We start the assessment by looking at the joints of your feet and their range of movement (ROM) followed by a standing test and watching you walk (as in the manual gait analysis). We then introduce you to The PodoSmart gait analysis system which accurately measures your walking profile and analysis your gait in real life conditions in just a few minutes. The intelligent insoles that measure your gait are placed inside your trainers which transmit data to our interface. The PodoSmart gait analysis system can detect the smallest foot movements and a microprocessor calculates the biomechanical data. From this we can accurately diagnose your biomechanics, advise what might be causing your pain and also from this we can advise on injury prevention (especially good for people who partake in any sporting activity). Once we have the data (which is available during your appointment) we can advise on the best treatment plan, this may be custom made foot orthotics.

Simple Orthotics

Prescription Orthotics (3D digital scanned)

When you purchase prescription orthotics, the price includes the fitting appointment, prescription orthotics (1 pair), follow-up appointment at 4-6 weeks and two further appointments at 6 and 12 months. The orthotics themselves should last for several years of wear and depending on your activity level, may need the top covering replacing after 1 - 2 years which is relatively cheap to do. Podiatrists advise that everyone wearing orthotics, should have their prescription checked every 5 years regardless of age.

Verruca (Palliative Care)

We start by looking at the best treatment option for each individual patient. A full treatment plan will be discussed with you. and the appropriate treatment will be supplied for continued home care. We require a minimum of three treatments.

Verruca Needling & Verrutop treatment  (see Podiatry treatments info. page for further information)

Toenail Reconstruction

The LCN (Iight cured nail), Wilde-Pedique gel, once applied and cured, will essentially look and cut like a regular toenail. This is an extremely elastic UV gel which sets when exposed to UVA light. This was developed specifically for corrective and restorative toenail treatments. The gel resin has the ability to bond to a surface, add strength and harden with a glossy finish. At the same time, it adapts to the movements of the toe due to its flexibility.

This is an ideal solution for clients who are looking for a cosmetically pleasing look and at the same time something that helps stop the snagging of the nail and possible infection. Usually, this requires refilling every four to six weeks until the toenail is fully grown.

Once applied, the prosthetic nail can be treated like any normal toenail: it may be cut and painted, and it will even allow you to use products such as UV gels. The prosthetic nail will not dissolve with acetone, and it has to be removed professionally after six to eight weeks or an infill should be done where the nail has grown at the nail base.

Who Is the Treatment For?

  • Fungal: This treatment can be used in conjunction with fungal nail treatment either in the form of topical or oral anti-fungal treatment. It should help in limiting the spread of any fungal infection. Additionally, it can also boost one’s confidence in showing off their feet.  An initial assessment will be required to check this treatment is suitable.
  • Nails Damaged by Trauma: A prosthetic nail can help the new nail grow into place along the nail bed. This minimises the risk of an ingrown nail.
  • Cracked or Split Nails: This helps in stopping them from further splitting or damage.

Diabetic Assessment

We will assess the lower limbs regarding their neurological and vascular status. During the assessment, we look for any changes in status, assessing touch, vibration, cold and pain sensations. Afterwards, we will advise on offloading pressure on certain areas to avoid ulceration and amputation. The cost also includes a detailed report to be sent to your GP and a copy for yourself.

Ingrown Toenail Surgery

This is the removal of part (PNA) or full (TNA) toenails under local anaesthetic with phenolisation (cauterisation of the nail bed to prevent re-growth). The price includes initial dressings, aftercare pack and advice and the three follow-up appointments.

Before any nail surgery can be undertaken, a full assessment will be carried out and the necessary consent form signed, thereafter a mutually convenient date and time for the surgery will be arranged. As per the Guidelines for Nail Surgical Procedures by our governing bodies, two podiatrists will be present for your surgery. Nail surgery is carried out at our Ilkley Clinic where there is FREE parking outside for your convenience.

Ingrown Toenail Consultation & palliative treatment

If you think you have an ingrown toenail and would like a consultation, we can assess and discuss all options with you, including surgery.

LFW Podiatry / Chiropody & Wellness Clinic at Ashlands Road, Ilkley also offers other treatments including reflexology, holistic massage, Indian Head Massage, Natural Lift Facelift massage.

Joy Kelly, ITEC, VTCT, Reflexologist/Massage Therapist/Reiki Practitioner

Joy has been practising for ten years in the West Yorkshire area as a mobile therapist and in clinic settings. Reflexology and massage are holistic therapies, which means it works on the principle that the whole body is treated in order to encourage its own healing systems. It treats the patient on a physical and emotional level and helps establish balance and harmony (homeostatis) in the body.

During a reflexology treatment, you will remain fully clothed while sitting or reclining on a couch with socks off so we can work on your feet and ankles. We will start with a foot massage and during the session, we will use a variety of reflexology techniques, with an emphasis on working on the parts of the feet appropriate to areas discussed during the consultation. The session ends with more foot massage.

We are pleased to say that complementary therapies are now being accepted by medical professionals worldwide. Some of them prescribe reflexology treatment along with more conventional treatments to encourage the recovery process. We feel that the addition of reflexology to our podiatry treatments will help enhance your overall treatment experience in the clinic.

Holistic Massage / Indian Head Massage

Massage treatments at the clinic are tailored to your needs on the day and can include back/shoulders/neck together with any combination of head/foot/arm/hand massage and Indian Head Massage. We also often combine massage treatments with some reflexology.

Natural Lift Facial Massage (also known as Facial Rejuvenation or the natural Facelift)

Try our wonderfully relaxing treatment which incorporates a unique blend of highly effective techniques from Indian Face Massage, Japanese Facial massage and facial reflexology. This treatment relieves deep tension in the muscles and will leave your face looking firmer and tighter. Over a period of time skin appears rejuvenated and lines are reduced, giving a refreshed, youthful look.

Initial appointments will usually take approximately one hour and 15 minutes when Joy will complete a consultation form together with you and have a chat about any particular issues you would like to address. Subsequent treatments will normally be 45 minutes to an hour.

Joy is based in our Ilkley Clinic on Ashlands Road, Ilkley on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
